Cardboard mice stealing a present: a Christmas gift wrapping idea

Here’s a great way to make Christmas morning even more fun for your kids, if that’s at all possible!

Picture the scene: It’s Christmas morning and your kids run into the living room looking for their presents… but instead of finding them under the tree, they find them halfway across the floor being carried away by mice!

Step by Step Guide

This gift wrapping idea is fairly easy to make, and to set up, just follow the instructions outlined below.

I’ve also provided printable artwork for the mice and a template for the stand… sign-up below and I’ll send you a link…

How to make Mouse Thieves: Step 1-2

Step 1: Cut a piece of cardboard from a corrugated cardboard box.

Step 2: Draw the cutting plan (above) onto it and cut it out using a craft knife and steel ruler.

How to make Mouse Thieves: Step 3-4

Step 3: Glue the ‘Glue tab’ to the inside of ‘Section B’.

Step 4: Apply glue to the ends of the midsection and fold up and join the top and bottom flaps.

How to make Mouse Thieves: Step 5-8

Step 5: Print the mouse artwork onto white card, choose between full colour or a black and white version you can colour in.

Step 6: If you can’t print onto card, print onto paper and then mount it onto card using glue.

Step 7: Cut out the mice using a craft knife or scissors.

Step 8: Finally, glue the mice onto the midsection of each stand.

Alternative Stand

The folded stand is designed to be cleverly hidden by the mice. If you are looking for something easier use a toilet roll tube…

How to make Mouse Thieves: Step 9-11

Step 9: Cut a 56mm section from a toilet roll tube.

Step 10: Squash the tube so the cross section is an oval shape.

Step 11: Glue the mouse onto the narrowest section of the tube.

How to make Mouse Thieves: Step 12

Step 12: To complete the effect, slide two mice under opposite sides of a wrapped pressie, at least 3 or 4 feet away from the Christmas tree… where they will be easily spotted by your excited kids!

Materials List

  1. One corrugated cardboard box
  2. White card (210gsm)
  3. Paper
  4. Colouring-in pens
  5. Paper glue
  6. Pencil and ruler
  7. Craft knife or scissors
  8. Steel ruler (for use with craft knife)
  9. Toilet roll tubes (for easy stand option)

Creative Takeaway

Making stuff isn’t just about making a thing… it can also be about making an experience. These mice by themselves are pointless, but used on Christmas morning as shown above, they will create a fantastic memory for your kids!
